How Connexus Church Increased Giving By 22%

payday loans LENDERS ONLINE

I recently had the honor of working with Carey Nieuwhof and the team at Connexus Community Church in Barie, Ontario. They were unbelievable to work with and they did the Thrive initiative. Here’s what Carey had to say about it:

Carey, you recently told me that you have over 50% of your donations coming in ONLINE.  How are you getting so many people to give online?

I like to think of it as chipping away at the iceberg.  We’ve done several ‘Automate the Important” blitzes, but we’ve also incorporated the message that many people give online into everything we do.  We even start our offering talk by thanking the people who have already given online.  We also revamped our website to make it very easy to give online.  We tend to see several families a week sign up for online giving. It’s not overwhelming, but over fifty two weekends it has a way of adding up.

What would you say to a church that is struggling with the idea of really pushing digital giving to their church?

I think it’s just a normal way of doing life these days.  We’ve really encouraged people to automate their key priorities in life.  So in the same we would like to see them save for retirement automatically, save for a vacation through automatic withdrawals from their bank account, we also want to see them give as a priority.  When you automate what’s important, you can accomplish far more than if you leave it to chance.  If giving is the key financial priority in a Christian’s life, why wouldn’t you automate it?

What is the top learning lesson about church finances you have learned in the last year?

When a leader gives finances his or her full attention and ties that attention to a specific strategy, things change.  A leader needs to move past simply having desires, wishes and intentions and adopt an action plan.

You did the Thrive initiative and said it was different than anything you guys have done in the past.  What was so different about it?

I’d say there were three key differences.  1.  We focused.  Outside of a capital campaign, we had never given day-to-day finances the kind of focus we did with Thrive.  2.  We made it about them.  Funding the day-to-day mission can too often be about what the church needs, not about what’s best for people.  Thrive is about what we want for them as much as what we want from them.  When people saw that we really wanted to help them live with margin and that our ask was genuinely about the mission we’re all on together as Christ followers, people responded.  3.  We got specific in the ask.  Never before have I as a leader gotten as granular about the ask.  I learned that in the past that we were good at inspiring and informing, but really fell short when it came to actually asking people to give.  In Thrive, we were crystal clear in asking every person for a response to the call to live on mission.

Thrive has given you about a 22% increase in operational income… Why do you think Thrive connected with your people?

I think people saw that Thrive was about what we wanted for them, not just from them.  I wonder if people had a hard time believing that we cared that deeply about the state of their personal finances and that we were going to spend twelve months together trying to help them find margin.  But once they saw we were serious about tangible help (The Financial Learning Experience includes large group teaching, small group curriculum and one on one counseling), their relief and delight was almost palpable.  I think the fact that we care as much about their financial well being as ours really made a key difference.

What would you say to a pastor that is contemplating investing into the Thrive coaching resource we are providing, but is kinda scared to pull the trigger?

Why are you scared?  If you want what you’re currently getting, keep doing what you’re currently doing.  In our case, prior to Thrive, we had a growing church that was always just ‘adequately funded’.  I was tired of so many areas of the ministry thriving but our finances only ‘surviving’. I felt I had nothing to lose by trying something different: you can’t build an incredible future on an underfunded ministry.  It was a tough call in the moment, but looking back on it there’s not a single leader who wishes we hadn’t done Thrive.  What’s even more encouraging is the number of people at Connexus who are authentically grateful we did Thrive.  It’s helping to change their lives.

For the next three days, you can try Thrive before you pay for it.  Sign up now, check it out, and take your church from surviving to thriving.

I’m Scared To Say This

I am giving away our Thrive Coaching Systems this week for $1.

Yes, you read that right… A $1,000 coaching system for $1. *This trial offer has expired.*

So, what’s included in Thrive?

  • 10 personal consulting videos from me – I will walk you through every step and phase of the THRIVE initiative process. In these videos, I will talk to you like I would if I were sitting in your office drinking a cup of coffee.
  • Done-for-You Resources – This means every document, form, PowerPoint slide, sermon, video bumper, lower third, offering envelope, commitment card, and brochure. We’ve even included a fully coded website ready to be uploaded to your server. (When we said “Done-for-you”, we weren’t kidding!)

The $1 allows you access to the entire Thrive Coaching System for 3 days. During the 3 days you can review it and decide to pay for the coaching or not. People tell me I’m dumb for doing this, but I’m doing it anyway.

I believe that every church should receive the Thrive Coaching System. I’ve tested this process in over 50 churches and the minimum budget increase has been 11%. That means if you have a $100,000 budget, you would increase it by $11,000.

This is a risk free trial for you and after 3 days you will invest the $499 for the system if you feel like it’s worth it.

I believe the best in you and know that you will not just rip off all the coaching and material if you have no intentions of staying and using it. I’m putting all the risk on me and my family.

So, go now and take advantage of this.

We only have 82 trials left and when we run out, we’ll shut down the trial offer.

Get access for just $1 today.

Get the exclusive offer this week only.  Click here and make sure you get your spot before they’re gone.

(If you decide the coaching and materials are not worth the money, just email Renee@givingrocket.com within the 3 days and we won’t charge you.)

Your Church Is Not Different

Is your  church:

  • In the country with blue collar people?
  • In the city with the urban upper class?
  • In the suburbs of middle America?
  • In the really unchurched area of the country?
  • In the middle of everything?
  • In the middle of the swamp people?
  • In the middle of artsy types?
  • In the Bible belt?

Here is one of the number one statement I hear from pastors, no matter the size or type of church… “Casey, my people are just different.  They aren’t like the other churches you work with.”  They say, “Yeah, that’s great for that guy but that doesn’t apply in my setting.”  I usually then sit and listen patiently and hear them explain how the people they are reaching aren’t like the people the other churches are reaching, or about how their staff isn’t structured like most churches or how their ministries work differently from all other ministries around the country.  I have listened to well over 100 leaders try to explain to me why their church is different and how our financial coaching won’t work for them.

Yes, your vision, mission & cultural DNA is different and unique, but the reasons why your people are giving or not giving are the same as every where else.  I understand that this might be taken wrong but I believe it’s an important point because it is quite possible to use the “my church is different” as an excuse to not build followers of Jesus in the area of finances.  Too many times, you say “We’re just different” as an excuse to keep doing the same things you’re doing (that aren’t working!) This quickly becomes an excuse not to listen to wise counsel.

It’s true in the area of finances. Whether you’re a small church, big church, rich church, poor church, or fundamental church…people are motivated to give and serve for the same fundamental reasons.  We’ve found that there are five reasons people give, and these reasons have nothing to do with the size of the town, size of the church, or the kind of people in the community.

Here is why this thinking is dangerous… It will allow you to except the status quo in giving, attendance, discipleship and everything else.  I want to issue a challenge to you today to starting thinking that your vision is unique, but your people are not.  Your people ARE people!  Don’t let this belief that your church is different keep you from accomplishing everything you can accomplish.

By the way, my temptation is to do the same thing for our organization.  However, a mentor of mine has a sign in his office that says, “Your Business Is Not Different”.  He makes everyone check their ego at the door of thinking it’s so different that he can’t help.

What are your thoughts on this?

Don’t Apologize

I want to shoot straight with you today, because I’m fired up about this issue.

I’m really tired of listening to preachers apologize for speaking the truth. I’m talking about the preacher who dances around an issue because they are scared to step on someones toes. I’m talking about the wimpy preacher who is afraid to preach a strong message even when the Bible is clear on something because they are afraid they will run off people.

The truth is the truth – you don’t have to beat people with it, or abuse your position as leader. You don’t have to be a jerk to be honest, and you don’t have to be crass to be authentic.

Giving is one of those issues.

I don’t believe unchurched people get mad when the preacher talks about money. They aren’t idiots…they understand that there is a building and a staff and programs. Yes…some pastors abuse this issue and that’s all they talk about it. But just because a few preachers abuse something doesn’t mean you can’t be honest, authentic and Biblical.

If your motives are pure and you are preaching God’s Word, then you don’t have to apologize for teaching the Bible. Whether it’s sin, faith, Jesus or money, shoot straight with people. You don’t have to apologetically ask people to fund the vision – you can clearly call people to participation. Stop saying things like, “I know you think that the church always talks about money, but we haven’t done a money sermon in 6 months.” Stop saying things like, “If you’re a guest, we don’t want you to give.” That’ probably not true anyway!

Pastor…God has called you and equipped you. Fulfill your calling and develop your skills, but you’re never going to lead people if you’re afraid of them. You’re never going to lead your church to experience God’s blessings if you’re scared of teaching them about stewardship.

I really believe that in the end, people appreciate it when you shoot straight. Friends are grateful for someone who will shoot straight with them…for someone who won’t tell them what they want to hear, but what they need to hear.

I hope you get the heart behind what I’m saying…I don’t want you to yell at your people all the time, but I do want to challenge you to lead them.

Go Old School and Increase Donations

We are rapidly advancing in this digital age.  Mobile phones have replaced landlines. Credit cards have replaced cash.  Email has replaced the Postal Service.  And we’ll continue to change.

Changes in culture lead to changes in the church.  Lyrics on a screen have replaced a hymnal in a pew.  The weekly email has replaced the monthly newsletter.  Giving kiosks are replacing passing the plate.

But slow down.  Not so fast.

In your quest to modernize, don’t leave behind people who haven’t embraced technology.  Yes, you can intentionally move people to online, recurring giving.  Yes, you should give people the convenience of donating via credit or debit cards.

But in your journey towards better efficiency aided by technology, you must not leave behind the majority of your people.  People still give when the buckets are passed in church.  In fact, personal donations through a passed plate are still the #1 source of income for churches in the United States.  Offering envelopes can make what’s already working in your church and make it more effective.

I’m an advocate of old school offering envelopes for your church.  Here’s why:

  1. They will help you collect information from first time givers.  You can’t follow up with people if you don’t know who they are.  If you provide envelopes, you’ll get information.
  2. They provide privacy for donors.  Nobody wants someone looking over their shoulder.
  3. Providing an envelope sets an expectation.  It’s a simple and clear call to action.
  4. Major non-profit organizations that rely on donations still use offering envelopes.

Yes, you need to emphasize online, recurring giving.  But don’t miss out on the majority of people who give…offering envelopes can make a difference.

We just released a brand new resource on offering envelopes.  In addition to showing you where to get them, we’ll show you how to use them. If you’re a Giving Rocket member, you’ve already got this resource – we sent it to you for free.  If you’re not a member, we’ve added it to the store.

How A Church of 400 Received an 84k Offering In One Day

My friend Zak White is the pastor of Revolution Church in San Antonio, TX.  What happened at his church recently was amazing when they took up 84K in ONE DAY!  I am going to give you the 120 day process they used!

These are the facts:

  • Increased their budget 20% in one day
  • Sustained increase because they have over 70% of their giving coming in digitally through online giving and mobile giving

Pastor Zak did something that most pastors are unwilling to do… He planned well and executed his plan.  He attended our intensive in Atlanta, which we no longer do because we have packaged it into a BRAND NEW, awesome resource called Thrive – Fund Anything In Your Church In 120 Days

Here are the THREE STEPS Zak Took:

1. Clarified The Vision – (Took 30 Days)

They made it absolutely crystal clear for people that when they give, it goes to something meaningful.  Just asking people to fund your budget, isn’t enough!

In our Thrive resource we just released we have taken our entire intensive process that helped Zak and put it into a 10-part video series that coaches you step by step through the exact same process his team used to take up 20% of their budget in one day.

2. Dripped The Vision – (Took 60 Days)

This is probably where church leaders mess up the most… YOU CAN’T JUST PREACH ON INCREASING GIVING AND IT WORK!  You have to spend some time dripping the vision out to the right people in the right ways before you publicly ask people to fund it.  Through a series of leadership gatherings, Zak and his team dripped very effectively and the results paid off.

The Thrive resource is going to tell you what to do at every step along the way.  You don’t need to go at this alone.  We have removed all of the pricing barriers for high priced financial coaching through this resource.  You can fund anything in 120 days through the process.

Most churches will pay anywhere from $15,000 to $70,000 for this type of coaching depending on the size of the church.   Because I want to eat dinner with my family, I no longer offer those services, but we made it available for $997.

Because we know that churches need the help we asked the team what would be a no brainer price that was a steal for this type of coaching and resource and they came up with $199.97/month for 3 months.  Every church can afford that if they want to have the help to raise their operational budget significantly!  We will only offer it at this price for the month of August, then it will be NO MORE!

Do What Zak Did & Utilize This Coaching HERE

3. Drop The Vision (Took 30 Days)

When increasing operational giving we suggest doing a 3-4 week message series in the fall and launching your vision for the next twelve months.  We call this Dropping The Vision.  Zak’s church did a series called Illuminate.  They talked about how when people increase giving it helps Illuminate the world with the light of Jesus.

When making your public ask to move the generosity level forward you can mess up big time.  One of the videos we put in the Thrive resource is tailored to helping you avoid the mistakes churches make when making a public ask.

We believe in this resource so much we are guaranteeing that it will raise you 3 times more than you invest in it or we will give you back your entire investment PLUS $500 bucks!

Start Thriving HERE!

I have hand held 50+ churches through this process in the last three years and it is a no brainer.

Managing The Tension

In many of the churches we work with, we’ve sensed a tension when it comes to talking about money.  Whether you pass the plate or have stations available in the back of the room, every church asks people to give in some way.  But that tension is still there.

  • We want to trust God, but we know it takes money to pay the bills.  That’s really a tension between faith and works.
  • We want to lead our people to trust God financially, but we don’t want to run off guests who think we always talk about money.  That’s a tension between evangelism and discipleship.

This tension is a good thing. It means that we’re looking at out motives and comparing them to Scripture.  When the tension goes away, we’re on dangerous ground.

We work with churches of all shapes and sizes, from big cities to suburbs to small towns, and while the tension is different from place to place, it’s still there.  But if you are a pastor and a church leader, you can’t hide from the tension.  Or just talk about it and debate it all day.  You were called and gifted to lead through it.

Your church matters, and the people in your community matter to God.  Now is not the time to cower in fear…now is the time to lead.   As you talk with your team and your congregation about giving, you don’t ever have to apologize for wanting God’s best for people.  You don’t ever have to dance around issues that are Biblically clear. God wants people to live generous lives, and  He has given the church an eternally important mission.  Work hard to be clear…work hard to connect the dots….let us help you with those things.  But take heart and take hold of your calling and lead people to follow Jesus in ALL areas of their lives.

We Are Expanding and Looking to Hire Writers

Giving Rocket launched in January of 2010 in order to help churches have more money for ministry. We are now helping more than 350 churches fully fund their vision. But our passion isn’t church finances…it’s the local church. We want to see the gospel spread and ministry increase.

To that end, we’re looking to launch several more rockets. In the next few months, you’re going to hear us talk about preaching rocket, leadership rocket, volunteer rocket, student ministry rocket and children’s ministry rocket.

As we look to help more churches in these areas, we’re looking to expand our team. Specifically, we are looking for content writers in the areas I mentioned above. You don’t have to quit your day-job…in fact, we’d prefer to work with people in the trenches of ministry. You also might not be the sole content provider for a particular rocket.

This would be a paid gig, and would depend on your level of contribution and skill. If you’re interested, send the following things:

  • A short bio with your ministry experience. Be sure to include links to websites and relevant media.
  • A written article on a specific subject within your area. For example, you might send a giving talk script for Giving Rocket, or a how to run a back to school retreat for student ministry rocket. We’re not just looking for recycled content freely available on the web, and we’re biased towards action-oriented, step-by-step stuff.  We always choose practical over theoretical.
  • The answer to this question: What do I have to say to leaders in my field?
Send me an email if you’re interested.
